How to Clean a Cast Iron Skillet 

Cleaning a cast iron skillet is pretty simple. Avoid using soap because it will strip the seasoning from the skillet. Instead, just rinse it with hot water and scrub it with a stiff brush or steel wool if necessary. You can also clean it with salt or baking soda. Just sprinkle some kosher salt or baking soda into the skillet and then rub it with a paper towel until the food particles are gone. Rinse it again with hot water and dry it completely with a clean towel.  We also like to put back on the stove and heat till dry.

How to Store a Cast Iron Skillet 

You want to season the pan, and then let the pan cool before storing. Then you need to store it in a cool, dry place. Many people like to hang their skillets on a pot rack or wall mount. Others like to keep them in a cabinet or drawer. Just make sure that the skillet is completely dry before storing it so that it doesn’t rust. Traditional cast-iron skillets are heavy and take up a good amount of space. You have to be able to lift or pull them down as needed. So take the size and weight into consideration when looking for the perfect place in your kitchen cabinets to store cast iron.

A cast iron skillet is an essential piece of cookware for any home cook, especially if you love to cook outdoors. They are durable, inexpensive, and easy to use. If you want to shop for some you can find them at most Walmart Super Centers in the camping section. They have a store brand or the traditional Lodge cast iron as well. You can get a skillet or Dutch oven and find so many wonderful recipes online that are made just for cast-iron cookware.

You can use and utensils even metal utensils, which is especially useful when cooking on a campfire and you don’t want your spatula to melt! Using metal spoons and spatulas will not harm your cast iron skillet.

Make sure you have oven mitts or silicone holders to touch the handle or sides of your pan though. The whole piece of cookware will be heated through, nice and evenly which is great for your food, but not great to grab ahold of. If you get a Dutch oven for the camp fire they can be handy but they will be HOT and heavy when it is time to lift it from the camp fire. Many times the Dutch ovens will have a nice handle on there for lifting. You want someone strong with good heat resistant gloves picking that up from the camp fire.
