I have been a native of Oklahoma City all of my life. Born and Raised here and it’s crazy how much our city has grown just in last several years.
I love to travel, and it’s even better when I get to hang out with some of my favorite girls to share in the experience. When I found out that my friends Carol and Jana were coming to OKC, I was so excited to grab my really good friend Nicky who lives not far from me and paint the town red. A huge thanks to the Oklahoma City Visitors Center for helping us put together the perfect Girlfriend’s Getaway.
WHERE TO STAY :
Did you know Orr Family Farm in south OKC has Conestoga wagons you can spend the night in? Yes! This fun idea is the perfect in-town “getaway” if you are looking for something for the family to do this summer.
I love this idea for a stay-cation, since you can add in the fun activities at Orr Family Farm for the kids, either the afternoon before you stay or the following morning. Enjoy a few modern conveniences and learn about pioneer life all at the same time! Our Oklahoma City Girlfriend’s Getaway just had to fit glamping into our schedule.
All three of us girls stayed in same wagon and it was perfect. It has a nice little table and chairs inside as well as air conditioning.
Inside there was a master bed and a set of bunk beds. The bunk beds even had outlets where you could charge your phone. Across from our wagons were very nice bathrooms and showers. They also offer a hospitality room with complimentary coffee and hot cocoa, a coin-op snack machine and laundry. We even had access to their 19-foot-long Signature Swim Spa.
Dr Orr gave us a tour around the grounds on golf carts and showed us all of the amenities that were available to use. It was so nice to be able to use the grounds when they were less crowded. He was such a gem and it was a pleasure to get to meet him in person.
If you have never had their homemade cookie dough , it’s AMAZING! I actually think I ate the whole cup. It’s made with safe ingredients and it’s something I’ll be getting every time I visit. They also offer fresh homemade chocolate chip cookies.
I love that our little city is getting with the times with new and unique places to stay like the 21 C Hotel and Museum. The hotel takes on a modern, hip approach to its building. There is a surprise on every floor.
We had a lot of fun browsing all the unique pieces of art and playing with mirrors. The museum part of the hotel is Free and open to the public 365 days/year.
21 C Hotel and Museum offers 135 boutique rooms. Ours were each slightly different. I loved the sitting area in mine, it created a space to do a little much needed work during my down time. The bed and bathroom was located right on the other side of that brown wall you see in the photo. They kind of remind you of the apartment’s in New York’s Soho neighborhood. You’ve probably also heard about those famous Purple Penguins? The girls had fun playing with these and my friend Carol can tell you all about them!
WHAT TO DO:
Oklahoma city offers a ton of things to do with your girlfriends! From shopping, to amazing food, movies, river walk and fun excursions. Check out some of the hot spots we picked out to explore.
UNDANDER– No Oklahoma City Girlfriend’s Getaway would be complete with out a day at the spa. Udånder is a Scandinavian steam and sauna spa set in the heart of downtown. As long as I have lived here I didn’t know this place existed. They offer an aromatherapy steam room, a Finnish dry sauna, soaking tubs, a communal relaxation area, 3 treatment rooms and a locker room with showers.
We treated ourselves to an amazing foot soak and mask. It was so nice and relaxing. We also took some time to enjoy the hot sauna. Check out their menu for a list of services.
MYRIAD BOTANICAL GARDENS –
Myriad Gardens is a hidden gem in downtown OKC! If you haven’t yet stopped in, you may be surprised to find they actually have a lot of family friendly activities available. You can enjoy the Crystal Bridge Tropical Conservatory during weekday hours of Monday-Saturday: 9am-5pm and on Sunday from 11am-5pm.
The outdoor grounds are open daily until 11pm, so this is a better option if you are downtown for another event and need something to fill in the time. Children 3 and under a FREE, while kids, military, senior and student admission prices are $5-$7.00. Adult admission is $8.00.
Right now, enjoy July in the Gardens with FREE urban dance led by instructors from 8pm-10pm. And take the family out for SONIC summer movies on Wednesdays, through July 24! This is a free weekly event at the Devon Lawn and Bandshell, starting at 8 pm.
For other summer events and info on the Myriad Gardens, head over to their website. There is something for everyone.
Now, if you are looking for something totally different to do, you need to visit FACTORY OBSCURA AT THE WOMB . It’s a very , how shall I say it, hands on experience. I basically call it interactive art. I don’t want to go into too much detail because I don’t want to spoil it for you but you definitely want to ask for the fun glasses that they hand out at the front desk. It will take your experience to a whole new level.
They are currently only on phase 1 of the building so they offering FREE ADMISSION until September 21st.
PLAZA DISTRICT – I actually grew up in this area and I am so impressed with what Oklahoma City is doing to really revitalize the area. It used to be a place with old run down houses and junk stores and now they have tuned it into a hot spot where everyone wants to hang out. A must stop on your Travel OK experience.
It’s lined with all kind of really neat shops and a few places to eat. I scored these Vintage sunglasses for under $10 from Bad Granny’s Bazaar.
One thing I most enjoyed where the hidden murals. I had no idea these even existed. They are just beautiful! They located on the sides and backsides of the building so make sure you leave time to explore.
GOOD EATS:
For a more relaxing, quiet atmosphere with a more formal feel, check out Barrios Fine Mexican Dishes on N. Hudson in Downtown OKC. We headed over for dinner, and after an afternoon of walking in the summer heat it was so nice to take our time and eat.
The food at Barrios is wonderful. We selected the Queso Fundido with Mushrooms, Poblanos, and Handmade Flour Tortillas as an appetizer ($12 and plenty to share).
Then also the Traditional Smashed Guacamole ($9 and sharing size), which is an essential with our tortilla chips!
For my entree I had to try the Roasted Chicken with Poblano Cream and Smoked Tomato Pico ($8.00). I usually gravitate toward enchilada dishes and it was delicious!
I hope you can give this one a try soon.
STITCH CAFE WEST VILLAGE – Next on our schedule was to visit Stitch OKC. Stitch is a trendy and fun cafe featuring coffee, eats and drinks, located within walking distance from lots of Bricktown attractions including the Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark.
Stitch has a great energy and comfortable but busy atmosphere. It’s a great place to kick back and laugh and talk.
Unlike many travel OK restaurant locations, it’s actually open at 7 am and features a coffee menu, as well as light and sweet breakfast options, toast and sandwiches, and baked goods. Their Bricktown menu can be found here.
This would be perfect to try out before a downtown meeting or work function, since it opens so early. For anyone staying in OKC from out of town, it makes a nice brunch spot after you check out of a hotel.
Prices range from about $4.50-$12.00.
PIE JUNKIE – Our next stop was Pie Junkie in Oklahoma City’s Plaza District. At Pie Junkie, the pecan pie was amazing! You can see my reaction in this pic after that first bite! I had to stick to my favorite, Pecan Pie, but they have so many options to choose from.
Whether it be fruit pies, cream pies or even frozen pies, they are sure to offer your favorite. You can even pick them up for holidays.
They have a huge menu, and also offer soft drinks. I did get a glass bottle of Coca-Cola too. If you prefer to order for an event, you can buy whole pies online whole pies online. Find the menu and order at their website.
We hope you enjoyed our ” travel ok ” Oklahoma City Girlfriend’s Getaway. There is so much to see and do in Oklahoma City that we will be doing more posts soon with lot’s more places to share. including Oklahoma State Parks.
