If you are looking for great food, deep history and you love the outdoors, then you need to visit Durham, North Carolina. We had the privilege to visit Durham during Travel Media Showcase and we got a recap of 5 Reasons to Visit Durham North Carolina.

Stageville House (1 of 1)

1. Stagville State Historic Site

The Bennehan-Cameron families plantation holding in Durham were among the largest in pre-Civil War North Carolina.  They were also among the largest in the entire South.  Today though it is just 71 acres and is separated into 3 different areas:  The main house, the slave quarters and the barn.

This historical site really does a great job of showing the difference in living quarters between the slave owners and and slaves.  You can really get a feel of how life was back then.

It was also pointed out to us that these slave quarters were closest to the road so they were the nicest.  We didn’t have time to walk around and see if there were other slave quarters around to compare but that would have been really interesting to see the difference.

We were able to walk around by the main family’s house and we found this old cemetery.  We never were able to find out who was buried here… if anyone.

Durham Bulls Stadium (1 of 1)

2. Durham Bulls Game

Have you seen Bull Durham?  Yep, this is THAT team!  Well not the team with Kevin Cosner but it’s that Durham Bulls baseball team.  This isn’t the ballpark that was in the movie but they really embrace it.  You can get memorabilia that has quotes from the movie on them.

Aside from the movie, the Durham Bulls are a good baseball team.  They had just clinched the South Division the game before we were there.  This stadium is a really cool stadium that has a really cool vibe to it and some amazing food.

You can just as easily connect with the world as tune it out.

When we walked in to our room we were almost speechless.  It was beautiful.  These aren’t your average hotel furnishings.  Of course the room can look amazing but if the bed is uncomfortable then it’s all for not.  Well don’t worry… the bed and pillows were extremely comfortable and made getting a good nights sleep really easy (and if you know me that’s not an easy thing).

Sometimes it’s the little things that make a stay amazing.  The King’s Daughter Inn thought of everything.  They have a fridge that has water and different cold drinks available for you. They also provide a variety of different snacks.  The best thing… They are FREE!

4. Durham Farmers Market

We enjoy walking around a good Farmers Market.  The Farmers Market in Durham doesn’t disappoint.  They have the fresh fruits and vegetables that you would expect but they also have natural and organic product sold there too!  We bought some natural and organic soap and some lotion there for our son.

They also had local artists and merchants there selling there handmade goods.  We almost bought some handmade pottery but we weren’t sure we could get it home in one piece.  We did get our dogs some homemade treats though!

5.  Museum of Life + Science

Butterfly (1 of 1)

The Museum of Life and Science in Durham is a pretty cool place!  It’s 84 acres full of things to do and discover.  We could have spent all day there and not seen everything!  Of course I was drawn to the Aerospace exhibits and Melissa wanted to spend all the time looking at the different animals!

They have everything… over 60 species of live animals, outdoor exhibits, a two story interactive science center and one of the largest butterfly houses on the east coast!

Luckys Deli (1 of 1)

The food scene in Durham is AMAZING.  We ate at Lucky’s Delicatessen for lunch.  Let me tell you… WOW.   I recommend getting the meatball sub.  The meatballs are handmade and are delicious!

Of course after walking our lunch off we had to get some dessert.  We decided to stop at The Parlour.  The Parlour is an ice cream parlor that has traditional and non tradition flavors.  I had Peach Pie and Pineapple Upside Cake ice cream!  OH. MY. GOSH.  It was AMAZING!  They will also let sample all the different flavors they have.
