Barcelona Shore Excursion from MSC Fantasia
When Daniel and I planned our Mediterranean cruise aboard the MSC Fantasia, Barcelona was one of the ports I was most excited about—and this five‑hour Barcelona Shore Excursion from MSC Fantasia promised to be the perfect introduction to the city.
With limited time in port, we wanted an experience that combined iconic sights, cultural depth, and just enough free time to explore on our own.
Arriving in Barcelona by Cruise Ship

Stepping off the MSC Fantasia into the vibrant energy of Barcelona immediately felt special. Unfortunately, our Barcelona excursion fell short of expectations. The description did not match the actual experience.

Our tour guide was very kind and helpful throughout the trip. However, the itinerary felt misleading and poorly planned.
Montjuïc Hill: The Best Views in Barcelona
Our excursion began with a short 15‑minute coach ride up to Montjuïc Hill, one of Barcelona’s most scenic overlooks. Montjuïc rises above Barcelona’s harbor and offers sweeping views of the city and coastline. From the top, you can see the port, skyline, and Mediterranean Sea all at once.

The hill provides a calm escape with gardens, walking paths, and scenic viewpoints. At the summit sits Montjuïc Castle, a historic fortress with panoramic views.

Nearby, the Magic Fountain of Montjuïc offers a lively display of water, light, and music, especially in the evenings. Just above it sits the grand Palau Nacional. The Palau Nacional is a grand landmark on Montjuïc, built for the 1929 International Exposition. Today, it houses the Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya, one of Spain’s top art museums, and offers impressive architecture and panoramic city views.
The surrounding Montjuïc area also features beautifully landscaped gardens, scenic walking paths, and cultural sites like the Montjuïc Castle overlooking the harbor. It’s a great place to slow down, take in panoramic views, and experience a quieter side of Barcelona beyond the busy city center.
Visitors can reach Montjuïc by bus, cable car, or on foot. It’s a great spot for photos, history, and a quieter side of Barcelona.

Was Montjuïc Worth the Stop on Our Barcelona Shore Excursion from MSC Fantasia?
The plan allowed 15 minutes for photos overlooking the city skyline. We did stop at a lookout point, but the visit felt rushed and brief. It matched the timing on paper, yet it lacked the relaxed pace described.
- Take a photo of the city and the harbor
- Get our bearings of Barcelona from above
- Soak in the Mediterranean coastline
As someone who loves photography, I found this one of my favorite moments of the day. It’s hard to beat seeing the entire city spread out below you. I definitely found myself wishing that we had spent a longer time at that spot.

Visiting the Sagrada Família: Gaudí’s Most Famous Creation
From Montjuïc, it was a 20‑minute scenic drive into the city center to reach La Sagrada Família, the most iconic landmark in Barcelona. Sagrada Família began construction in 1882 as a traditional church project. A year later, Antoni Gaudí took over and transformed it into his bold, symbolic masterpiece. He devoted the last years of his life entirely to the basilica until his death in 1926, when less than a quarter was complete.
Construction continued slowly due to limited funding and was interrupted during the Spanish Civil War, when parts of Gaudí’s plans were destroyed. In the decades since, architects have worked to interpret his vision using modern techniques. Today, the basilica remains under construction, funded largely by tourism, with completion anticipated in the coming years.
Walking to the Basilica on our Barcelona Shore Excursion from MSC Fantasia
Due to traffic restrictions, our coach parked nearby, and we walked approximately 15 minutes to the basilica. I actually appreciated this—it gave us a chance to see the surrounding neighborhood and really build anticipation. The neighborhood around Sagrada Família sits in Barcelona’s Eixample district and offers a safe, lively, and convenient stop on a cruise excursion. It’s a mostly residential area with wide, grid-like streets and classic architecture, but right around the basilica, it gets very busy with tourists.
Just a few blocks away, the vibe becomes calmer and more local, with everyday shops, cafés, and a more authentic feel. A highlight is Avinguda Gaudí, a pleasant, tree-lined street connecting the basilica to the beautiful Hospital de Sant Pau, perfect for a relaxed stroll or a quick coffee stop.
Overall, expect a walkable, well-connected area with plenty to see and eat—just plan for crowds near the main attraction and consider visiting early or later in the day for a smoother experience. Just expect high tourist traffic, noise, and generally higher prices than in other residential areas.

Exploring the Exterior of the Sagrada Família on our Barcelona Shore Excursion from MSC Fantasia
Here is where I was most disappointed. We did not get super close to the church, nor did we get to go in. Instead we stood in the gardens across from the church and took photos from there. This church is absolutely huge and it’s gorgeous.
What stood out most:
- The incredibly detailed façades covered in symbolic carvings
- Sculpted animals, like snails and snakes, are hidden throughout the architecture
- Learning how construction began in 1882 and continues to this day
Listening to the guide explain Gaudí’s vision made the basilica feel alive, not just historic. Even without going inside, the experience was unforgettable.
Afterward, we walked 15 minutes back to the coach, taking plenty of lasting photos along the way.
Free Time & Shopping at the World Trade Center
Next came the part Daniel was quietly looking forward to—free time. The itinerary outlined a 30-minute drive to the World Trade Center. It promised 90 minutes of free time for shopping and exploring lively streets. In reality, we stopped at a small, quiet shopping area with very limited options.
The stop felt random and lacked the energy described. The full 90 minutes of engaging shopping time did not materialize. Here is what I discovered. This complex is primarily a business and conference center, not a true shopping destination. It includes offices, meeting spaces, a hotel, and a few restaurants and small commercial services.
There are some shops and cafés in the central plaza, but they mainly serve people who work there. So if your excursion promised a lively shopping stop here, it likely felt underwhelming.

Optional: Maremagnum Shopping Mall
For anyone who wants a dedicated shopping stop, the Maremagnum Shopping Mall is right nearby. The Maremagnum is the only commercial center in the city that’s licensed to operate 365 days a year and offers:
- International and Spanish brands
- Waterfront dining
- A relaxed, modern setting
Note: Some popular spots, including La Boqueria Market, may be closed on Sundays or public holidays.

La Rambla
La Rambla is Barcelona’s most famous pedestrian boulevard, running through the heart of the city from Plaça de Catalunya down to the waterfront at Port Vell. It’s lively and often crowded, filled with street performers, flower stalls, markets, and cafés.
Compared to areas like Eixample, where Sagrada Família is located, Las Ramblas feels more touristy and fast-paced. It’s about a 10–15 minute drive or a short metro ride from the Sagrada Família area, making it easy to visit both in one day.

Returning to the MSC Fantasia (or Staying Longer)
The official Barcelona shore excursion from the MSC Fantasia ended with a 30‑minute coach ride back to the port, which got us back to the ship on time.
Flexible Return Option
That said, if you want more time in the city:
- You can choose to stay behind at the World Trade Center and go from there.
- Return to the ship independently using the shuttle service
Just be sure to plan carefully so you don’t miss embarkation.
Important Excursion Information to Know Before You Go on the Barcelona Shore Excursion from MSC Fantasia
Walking & Mobility Considerations
- Expect moderate walking, especially near the Sagrada Família
- Guests with limited mobility should evaluate comfort levels
The pace also proved challenging for some travelers. An elderly couple in our group struggled to keep up with the fast walking. At one point, one of them even fell during the rush.
Wheelchair Accessibility
Wheelchair users can join with the following requirements:
- Must be accompanied by a paying helper
- Wheelchairs must be foldable
- Coaches do not have lifts or ramps
Was this Barcelona Shore Excursion from the MSC Fantasia Worth It?
If you visit Barcelona, consider choosing a hop-on hop-off bus instead. This option gives you control over your schedule and more time at each stop. Barcelona’s architecture deserves time, photos, and a slower pace. This excursion simply didn’t deliver the experience it promised. Barcelona is such an incredible city, full of stunning architecture and culture, and we left feeling like we barely scratched the surface.
