MSC Fantasia 5 Day Cruise Review (Ports & Tips)

If you’ve ever dreamed of cruising through Europe but didn’t want to commit to a long itinerary, this MSC Fantasia 5 Day Cruise from Civitavecchia (Rome) is one of the best ways to experience multiple iconic destinations without feeling overwhelmed.
Daniel and I recently sailed this exact route, and I’m sharing everything you need to know—from what it’s really like onboard to how we explored each port without overspending on excursions. Plus, I’ll break down whether upgrading to the Aurea Experience is actually worth it (spoiler: it was for us).
If you’re considering booking this cruise, there are a few tips in here that can make your experience so much better.
MSC Fantasia 5 Day Cruise Itinerary Overview
This sailing departs from Civitavecchia, the main cruise port for Rome, and includes three incredible stops:
- Barcelona, Spain (8:00 AM – 7:00 PM)
- Marseille (Provence), France (8:00 AM – 6:00 PM)
- Genoa (Portofino), Italy (8:00 AM – 6:00 PM)
What I love about this itinerary is that it gives you a mix of big city experiences and charming coastal towns. It’s also a great balance of guided excursions and DIY exploring.
I’ll be sharing full, detailed port guides separately on the blog, but I’ll give you enough here to confidently plan your days.
The Ship: What It’s Like on MSC Fantasia
MSC Fantasia has a very elegant, European feel compared to many American cruise lines. Think grand staircases, polished finishes, and a slightly more relaxed, less “over-the-top” atmosphere.
There are multiple pools and hot tubs onboard, and plenty of places to sit and relax without feeling crowded. There is also an area called the Top 18 Solarium, which is an adults-only space. If you enjoy a quieter, more peaceful environment, this alone is worth considering when choosing your package. Please note there is only one hot tub in this area. If it’s a windy day the water may be a bit chilly.
Fun on the MSC Fantasia Cruise

Entertainment onboard includes live music, theater-style shows, and themed evenings. It’s not as loud or flashy as some cruise lines, but it feels more refined and relaxed.
Our first night onboard ended with the lively White Party—and let’s just say, we stayed up way past our bedtime but had an unforgettable time. One highlight: a persistent (and very tipsy) older Italian man who kept trying to dance with me while Daniel sat back laughing at the whole scene.
I even jumped into some karaoke and spent most of the night dancing—definitely a fun workout! Dinner at the ship’s steakhouse was another win; the food so far has been impressive.. Sleep didn’t come easily; we were still buzzing from the party, and the beds were a bit firmer than expected, so we both woke up a little sore.
One thing that really stood out on this cruise was the entertainment staff. They go above and beyond, actually joining guests at their tables and creating a more personal, one-on-one experience, which made the night feel even more special. Even with little sleep, day one of the cruise was an absolute success.
Pro Tip: The higher decks near the solarium tend to be quieter and offer some of the best views on the ship.
Our MSC Fantasia Room: Premium Balcony Stateroom with Aurea Experience (Cabin 11183)

We booked a Premium Balcony Stateroom with the Aurea Package, and I would absolutely choose this again.
Having a balcony in the Mediterranean makes a huge difference. There’s something special about waking up and seeing the coastline or enjoying a quiet moment at sea with coffee in hand. Our bathroom featured a standard layout with a shower, sink, toilet, and vanity area.

The Aurea Experience adds several perks that made our trip smoother and more enjoyable:
- Priority boarding (which saved us a lot of time)
- Flexible dining instead of fixed dining times
- Access to the adults-only solarium
- Spa benefits and relaxation perks
Additional Package We Added
We also added an upgraded package that included:
- Three specialty restaurant visits per person
- One 55-minute Balinese massage per person
- One hour of thermal spa access per day
- Minibar included
- Premium Extra Drink Package (drinks up to $16)
- Wi-Fi for two devices per person (non-transferable once connected)
Important Tip: As soon as you board the ship, go straight to book your spa appointments and specialty dining. These fill up quickly, and waiting even a few hours can limit your options.

Food & Dining Onboard the MSC Fantasia
Dining on MSC is a bit different than what many Americans are used to. It leans more toward a European style, which means meals can feel a little slower and more relaxed.
You’ll have access to:
- A buffet for breakfast, lunch, and casual dining
- A main dining room for multi-course dinners
The buffet is great for quick meals, especially in the mornings or when returning from port. The main dining room offers a more traditional cruise dining experience.
Since we had the specialty dining package, we were able to try a variety of upgraded restaurants, including steakhouse and seafood options. These meals were a highlight of the trip.
Pro Tip: Try to schedule your specialty dining on sea days or earlier in the evening so you’re not rushed after long port days.
Dining at the Butcher’s Cut Steakhouse

If you’re sailing aboard the MSC Fantasia, there’s one dining experience that deserves a top spot on your must-do list—and yes, it’s so good we booked it twice.
Butcher’s Cut Steakhouse quickly became our favorite place to unwind in the evenings. From the moment we were seated, everything felt just right: warm, inviting, and effortlessly elevated without being the least bit stuffy.
I ordered the filet both nights (no regrets whatsoever), and Daniel made the most of the menu with a ribeye one evening and a New York strip the next. Every steak arrived exactly as ordered—perfectly cooked, beautifully seasoned, and packed with rich, satisfying flavor. It’s exactly what you hope for when you treat yourself to a specialty steakhouse at sea.

What surprised me most, though, were the sides. The smoked tomato soup had this incredible depth of flavor that I’m still thinking about, and the onion rings? Absolutely addictive—crispy, golden perfection.

Dessert on the MSC Fantasia felt like a perfect finale. The peanut butter and milk chocolate cookie delivered a rich, classic flavor. It paired perfectly with cool vanilla ice cream. The New York cheesecake offered a more refined option. It was dense, creamy, and lightly sweet. Fresh strawberries added a bright, balanced finish. Together, the desserts created a mix of indulgence and restraint.
The service tied everything together beautifully. The staff stayed attentive without hovering and friendly without feeling forced. They created a relaxed and personal dining experience from start to finish.
The dress code leans toward dressy casual and adds a sense of occasion. You can dress up slightly while still feeling comfortable and at ease. If you plan to dine here, book your reservation early. This experience fills up quickly and is worth repeating.
Drinks: What’s Included and What’s Not
Basic drinks like water, coffee, and tea are included. Soda, alcohol, specialty coffees, and cocktails are not included unless you purchase a drink package.
We had the Premium Extra Drink Package, and it covered most drinks up to $16. If a drink exceeded that amount, you only pay the difference.
If you plan on having cocktails, wine, or specialty coffee daily, this package can be a great value.

And speaking of water, sailing with MSC Cruises, we experienced a thoughtful, eco-friendly initiative that really stood out. While onboard the MSC Fantasia, we were each given a stainless steel water bottle as part of the company’s AQUA program—an effort to significantly reduce single-use plastics. Instead of relying on disposable water bottles, guests can refill their reusable ones at stations throughout the ship.
It’s a simple shift, but one that has a meaningful environmental impact when you consider how much plastic is typically consumed on a cruise. The bottles were convenient to carry, perfect for excursions, kept our water cold, and even doubled as a practical souvenir to take home. It’s encouraging to see MSC Cruises taking tangible steps toward sustainability, proving that small changes can collectively make a big difference.
Can You Bring Your Own Drinks or Snacks?
MSC Cruises mostly bans bringing food onboard, but allows small amounts of factory-sealed, non-perishable snacks (like chips or granola bars) in carry-ons. Homemade, fresh, or opened foods are not allowed, and food bought at ports is usually taken when re-boarding. Sealed baby food/formula and medically necessary snacks are permitted.
For drinks, guests can bring up to two 750 mL bottles of wine per cabin (carry-on only). A limited amount of non-alcoholic drinks (up to 12 sealed cans or cartons per person) is allowed, but most bottled beverages are not. Policies can vary depending on your departure port, so it’s always best to double-check before sailing. Soda policies can vary as well.
Packing Tips You’ll Be Glad You Knew
One of the best tips for MSC cabins is that the walls are magnetic.
Bring magnetic hooks to hang:
- Hats
- Jackets
- Bags
- Lanyards
This helps keep your cabin organized and makes a small space feel much more functional.
Also, keep in mind:
- Surge protectors are not allowed
- Cruise-approved power strips without surge protection are allowed
Dress Code and Formal Nights
MSC does have a dress code for evenings, especially in the main dining room.
- Daytime: casual
- Evenings: smart casual
- Formal night: optional but encouraged
- Themed Nights: While on board we had White night, tropical night, disco night and 80’s night. Participation is optional.
If you enjoy dressing up, this is a fun opportunity. If not, you can still dine in more casual venues.

The Spa Experience (One of Our Favorite Parts)
The spa onboard was one of the highlights of our cruise. The MSC Aurea Spa on the MSC Fantasia is a spacious, Balinese-inspired wellness retreat on Deck 14, offering massages, beauty treatments, and a full thermal suite with saunas, steam rooms, and thalassotherapy baths. (Please note that the baths are an extra charge) With ocean views, a salon, gym, and relaxation areas, it’s a one-stop spot for onboard pampering—especially for guests with the Aurea Experience, who enjoy included thermal access.

With our package, we had access to:
- Sauna and steam rooms (did not included the pools)
- Heated loungers
- Relaxation areas with ocean views
And the Balinese massage was incredibly relaxing—definitely worth it after long days of walking in port.
If you’re someone who enjoys a slower, more relaxing cruise experience, I highly recommend adding spa access.
Port Stops and How to Explore Them
Barcelona, Spain
In Barcelona, we chose to book the Barcelona Essentials: Gaudí, Montjuïc, and Shopping excursion through the cruise line. This excursion was our only let down. It didn’t quite fit the description and we missed seeing a lot. So we can’t actually recommend this one.
We thought this would be a good option because Barcelona is a large city, and navigating it on your own in a limited time can feel overwhelming. We thought we would be able to see major highlights efficiently and still have time to shop and explore. I’ll be sharing a full Barcelona guide on the blog soon, including how to do this port on your own if you prefer.

Marseille (Provence), France – DIY Day
Marseille was one of the easiest ports to explore without an excursion.

We took the big double-decker bus, which allowed us to get outside the port and see some great architecture. This port always seems to get bad reviews, but i think that’s because people don’t get outside the city port. We definitely recommend taking the double-decker bus. You can book it right outside the port. It’s around €25–€30 euros.
There is also the Les Petits Trains de Marseille, which is a small tourist train that takes you through the city and up to Notre-Dame de la Garde. You can see some incredible views, but please note this does not stop along the way. It goes straight up to the church, stops to let you off, and then goes straight back.
Tickets were around €10–€12 per person, making it a very budget-friendly option.

After visiting the basilica and enjoying the incredible views, we spent the rest of the day walking around the Old Port area. There are plenty of cafes, shops, and scenic spots to enjoy at your own pace. We even went to the aquarium. But we will be doing a full post on this port later.
This was a perfect low-stress day.

Genoa to Portofino – DIY Travel Guide
If you want to head over to Portofino instead of booking an excursion, here is an option.
Step-by-Step Directions
- From Genoa, take a train to Santa Margherita Ligure
- Cost: approximately €5–€10
- Travel time: about 45 minutes
- Walk to the ferry terminal
- Take a ferry to Portofino
- Cost: approximately €15–€20
- Travel time: about 15 minutes
Budget Option
You can also take Bus #82 from Santa Margherita to Portofino for about €3–€5.
The ferry is more expensive, but the views along the coastline are absolutely stunning and worth it if your budget allows. After visiting Portofino, you can return and spend some time walking around Genoa before heading back to the ship.
Laundry Onboard the MSC Fantasia
Laundry services are available for an additional cost. Self-service laundry options are limited, so plan accordingly, especially on shorter cruises.

Pools, Hot Tubs, and Adult-Only Spaces
There are multiple pools and hot tubs onboard, but don’t forget the Top 18 Solarium, which is an adults-only area. However, we did see someone with a toddler there.
If you’re looking for a quieter space to relax, this is one of the best spots on the ship.

Final Thoughts: Is the MSC Fantasia 5 Day Cruise Worth It?
This cruise is a great option if you:
- Want to experience multiple European destinations in a short time
- Enjoy a mix of guided excursions and independent exploring
- Appreciate a more relaxed, European-style cruise atmosphere
- Want to add spa and relaxation to your trip
The combination of beautiful ports, a comfortable ship, and the flexibility to explore on your own made this a truly memorable experience.
