Sharing is caring!

From landing at Heathrow to sipping tea in Mayfair, this was the perfect way to start our Europe trip. There’s something about arriving in London that instantly makes you want to lean into tradition. Especially when you’ve booked a Fortnum & Mason afternoon tea.

The night before we left for Athens, we decided not to waste time easing into the trip. Instead, we went straight into one of London’s most iconic experiences and it ended up being one of the best decisions we made. We had reservations at The Diamond Jubilee Tea Salon at Fortnum & Mason in London.

Why We Chose Fortnum & Mason Afternoon Tea in London

When you start researching afternoon tea in London, you quickly realize there are endless options. But Fortnum & Mason stands out for a reason. This isn’t just tea—it’s history, tradition, and one of the most well-known tea experiences in the city. If you’re going to do afternoon tea in London, this is one of those places that feels worth prioritizing.

Staying atHilton London Heathrow Airport Terminal 4 Hotel

Hilton London Heathrow Airport Terminal 4 is a convenient, upscale airport hotel. It connects directly to Terminal 4 by a covered walkway. This makes it ideal for early flights or long layovers. The hotel offers comfortable, soundproof rooms. It has several dining options, including OXBO Kitchen, Café, and Bar. Amenities include a fitness center, executive lounge, and meeting spaces.

It also provides easy access to central London. Paddington is about 35 minutes away via the Elizabeth Line. The hotel is also close to other Heathrow terminals. Overall, it’s known for combining practicality with a relaxed, full-service hotel experience right at the airport.

From Heathrow to Piccadilly Circus

We landed at Heathrow, checked into our hotel and headed right back out again to head to afternoon tea/ our dinner at Fortnum & Mason. Instead of dealing with traffic, we took the Tube from Terminal 4 to Piccadilly Circus. It was simple, direct, and honestly, the easiest way to get into the city without worrying about timing. When we stepped out into Piccadilly, that’s when it hit us—we were finally in London.

Why We Booked Afternoon Tea at 5:00 PM

One of the best decisions we made was booking tea at 5:00 PM. It turned the experience into dinner, which meant we didn’t need to plan another meal after a long travel day. It also gave us enough time to get settled at the hotel without feeling rushed, trying to make an earlier reservation. And trust me—this is not a light snack situation.

The moment you walk into the Tea Salon, everything slows down. The space is elegant but welcoming, with soft colors, polished service, and an atmosphere that feels special without being intimidating. It’s the kind of place where you can settle in and really enjoy the experience.

Your table is reserved for:

They also allow a 15-minute grace period, which is helpful if you’re navigating London transportation for the first time.

What You Get with Fortnum & Mason Afternoon Tea

This is where the experience really shines. We opted for the classic afternoon tea, though it’s worth noting that they also offer a savory menu and a gluten-free option, which makes the experience accessible for different tastes and dietary needs. One of the nicest touches was that we each got to choose our own tea (the tea is served in personal pots and refilled throughout) from their extensive selection, turning what could be a routine choice into something a bit more personal.

Daniel went with the Earl Grey, a timeless choice that was smooth, fragrant, and exactly what you’d hope for in such a setting. I chose the pomegranate and rose tea, which felt a little more adventurous—light, floral, and subtly sweet without being overpowering. Both paired beautifully with the tiers of treats that followed.

Tiers of food during Fortnum & Mason afternoon tea

Your Fortnum and Mason afternoon tea in London includes:

  • A full selection of teas (and guidance on choosing the right one)
  • Finger sandwiches
  • Freshly baked scones with clotted cream and jam
  • A beautiful assortment of pastries

At The Diamond Jubilee Tea Salon, afternoon tea follows a classic format. It begins with finger sandwiches like coronation chicken. This is a creamy chicken salad with a mild curry flavor, created for the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953. You’ll also find options like cucumber and smoked salmon. Next come warm plain and fruit scones with clotted cream and jam. The final course includes pastries and cakes such as éclairs, lemon tarts, and Battenberg.

Everything is refillable, including sandwiches, scones, and tea. This makes the experience feel relaxed and unhurried. The portions are generous—we couldn’t finish everything. The service is attentive and never rushed, making it easy to enjoy each course.

How Much Does Fortnum & Mason’s Afternoon Tea Cost?

Afternoon tea is priced at around £84 per person. Yes, it’s a splurge—but this is one of those experiences where you’re paying for more than just the food. You’re paying for:

  • The Setting – Fortnum & Mason began in 1707 when William Fortnum and Hugh Mason opened a modest grocery store in Piccadilly. Over time, the shop evolved into a symbol of British luxury, earning a reputation for its fine foods, teas, and iconic hampers.
  • The Service – The staff remained attentive without being intrusive, carefully anticipating our needs while giving us the space to relax and enjoy the experience at our own pace.
  • The tradition-Today, it remains an iconic institution, blending its historic roots with a reputation for high-quality goods and timeless elegance.
  • The overall experience-Shopping at Fortnum & Mason feels less like a typical retail stop and more like stepping into a refined, distinctly British experience. The store strikes a balance between heritage and luxury, with its blue-green or pale mint hue color scheme, beautifully arranged displays, and an atmosphere that encourages slow browsing rather than rushed purchasing.

For us, it felt completely worth it.

Final Thoughts on Our Fortnum & Mason Afternoon Tea Experience

We enjoyed our time wandering around the store and seeing all the distinctive displays. The Fortnum & Mason Afternoon Tea experience feels less like a simple indulgence and more like stepping into a living tradition—where polished silver teapots, warm scones, and attentive service come together in one of London’s most iconic settings. From the elegant Diamond Jubilee Tea Salon to its centuries-old heritage, it’s the kind of experience that lingers long after the last sip.

But if that refined, storybook atmosphere sparked your curiosity, why stop at classic British elegance? Around the world, cafés are reimagining the ritual of coffee and tea into something far more immersive—where fantasy, design, and storytelling take center stage.

Take a look at whimsical concepts like the themed cafés featured in Athens, where sipping a latte might mean stepping into a fairytale forest, a vintage film set, or even a surreal dreamscape. Much like Fortnum’s elevates tradition, these spaces transform everyday moments into experiences—blurring the line between café and adventure.
