What to Know Before Visiting the Acropolis of Lindos
Visiting the Acropolis of Lindos was one of the highlights of our Mediterranean cruise—and for good reason. As a travel blogger with a passion for history and ancient sites, I couldn’t pass up the chance to explore one of Greece’s most iconic archaeological wonders. Located on the island of Rhodes, the Lindos Acropolis is not just a feast for the eyes with its panoramic sea views, but also a window into the deep and complex history of ancient Greece.

Why the Lindos Acropolis Is Important
The Lindos Acropolis dates back to the 4th century BC and was a major religious and political center. The most famous structure here is the Temple of Athena Lindia, built around 300 BC. Athena was revered as the protector of Lindos, and the temple served as a sacred place of worship. Over the centuries, the site has seen layers of occupation, from the Greeks to the Romans, Byzantines, and even the Knights of St. John—each leaving their mark.
Walking through the ruins, you’ll see remnants of ancient stairways, a restored stoa (covered walkway), and defensive walls from the medieval era. But nothing compares to the feeling of standing in the same spot where ancient worshippers once honored the goddess Athena, with the deep blue Aegean stretching out below you.

Tips for Getting There from the Cruise Port (Without an Excursion)
If you’re visiting Rhodes on a cruise and want to explore Lindos independently, it’s totally doable:
- Taxi from Rhodes Town: It’s a 45-minute drive from the port to Lindos. Taxis are available near the cruise terminal, and you can often arrange a round-trip fare (with a wait time) for around €80–€100. Confirm the price upfront.
- Rent a Car: If you’re comfortable driving, rent a car near the port. This allows you to explore more of the island, including hidden beaches and hilltop villages.
- Local Bus: Budget travelers can hop on a public bus from Rhodes Town. It’s inexpensive, but the ride takes about 1.5 hours and may be crowded in peak season.
Whichever method you choose, arrive early to avoid the heat and the crowds, especially if you’re visiting in summer.

Insider Tips for Visiting the Acropolis of Lindos
- Wear Good Walking Shoes: The climb to the top is steep and includes uneven stone steps. You’ll want sturdy, non-slip shoes.
- Bring Water and Sunscreen: There’s minimal shade, and the sun can be intense, especially midday.
- Don’t Skip the Village: Before or after your Acropolis visit, stroll through the whitewashed village of Lindos below. It’s full of charm, winding alleys, rooftop cafés, and local shops.
- Go Early or Late: To beat the tour buses and high temps, plan your visit right after opening or closer to closing time.
