However, new additions to the lineup include the offerings such as the Americana Bean Jamboree and the Hippie Hill Fest. Mike’s Music & Dance Barn offers fun evenings of live music and dancing. Additionally, local venues like the Brown County Inn and the Brown County Convention Center host special events throughout the year.

T.C. Steele State Historic Site
The T.C. Steele State Historic Site is the former home and studio of landscape painter Theodore Clement Steele. A member of the Hoosier Group of American Impressionist painters, Steele named his residence the House of the Singing Winds. The surrounding gardens and woodlands inspired many of his renowned works and continue to enchant visitors. The historic buildings showcase original artwork, set amidst 211 acres of gardens and trails.
Steele moved to Brown County, Indiana, in 1907, already a celebrated artist. He built the House of the Singing Winds to share with his wife, Selma. Inspired by northern European landscape painters, Steele sought to capture Indiana’s unique light and atmosphere. He and his peers, the Hoosier Group, aimed to depict the Midwestern landscape’s beauty. Selma Neubacher Steele, his wife, studied at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY. She designed beautiful textiles for their home and found her true passion in creating stunning personal gardens. Thanks to their significant artistic influence, Brown County, Indiana flourished into the Midwest’s foremost art colony. In 1945, Selma Steele donated their estate to Indiana. Visitors can tour the home and studio, enjoy exhibits, and explore the gardens. The site, part of the Indiana State Museum & Historic Sites system, offers a rich blend of art and nature.
Exploring the Surrounding Area
Brown County State Park
“Often called the “Little Smokies,” Brown County is the largest state park in Indiana. The nickname is due to the similarities with the Great Smoky Mountains. Located just a few miles east of Nashville, It covers 16,000 acres and offers hiking and biking trails for all levels. The popular 2.2-mile Ogle Lake Trail loops around the serene lake. For a more challenging hike, try the rugged 3.5-mile trail to Hesitation Point.” In addition to hiking and mountain biking, Brown County State Park boasts a range of other outdoor activities.
Our adventure began at the historic Abe Martin Lodge, where we gathered for an overview before splitting into hiking and mountain biking groups. The trails were stunning, and we captured so many incredible moments along the way. Here are some of our favorite photos from the day!
Horseback riding is a favorite pastime, with guided trail rides available for both beginners and experienced riders. There are several fun things to do at Brown County State Park. Climb the 90′ Fire Tower for a breathtaking view. Checkout the rare Yellowwood tree on Trail 5. Make a visit to the nature center to see the rare timber rattlesnake. Cool off by jumping in the Water Park pool at Abe Martin Lodge.
Things to Do at Ogle and Strahl Lake
The park’s two lakes, Ogle Lake and Strahl Lake, offer opportunities for fishing, kayaking, and canoeing. Lake Ogle serves as the water supply for Brown County State Park. Until last year, the park managed its water treatment in-house, sourcing from the lake. However, now the park has contracted with the town of Nashville for water treatment services. Despite this change, Lake Ogle remains essential for recreational activities and serves as a wildlife habitat. For outdoor activities, consider a boat rental to explore the area’s beautiful waters.
While exploring the lake area, visitors might spot a beaver marsh on the far side. A small dam there reveals the beavers’ efforts to manage water levels. The marsh, spanning 17 acres, is relatively small, yet crucial for the beavers’ survival. They manipulate water levels to create channels, promoting plant growth for food and providing escape routes from predators. While beavers are industrious creatures, they are most vulnerable on land, making water management essential for their habitat.
Yellowwood State Forest
Located to the west of Brown County State Park, Yellowwood State Forest is a highlight of Brown County. It spans nearly 24,000 acres of pristine woodlands, hiking trails, and serene lakes. It’s an outdoor enthusiast’s dream, with opportunities for mountain biking, horseback riding on well-maintained horse trails, and hiking the challenging Fire Tower Trail. For those looking to unwind, the forest’s tranquil environment is perfect for primitive camping and exploring deep ravines on wooded trails. Nearby Lake Monroe provides a scenic backdrop for boating and fishing. while the Salt Creek and Bean Blossom Creek add to the area’s natural charm.
How Did the New Deal Help Indiana State Parks?
During the Great Depression, the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) was established as part of President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s New Deal. The CCC aimed to provide jobs to young, unemployed men while addressing conservation and natural resource management needs. Across the country, CCC camps were set up in rural and wilderness areas. That included Brown County and many Indiana state parks. These camps employed thousands of young men and contributed to the construction of trails, roads, bridges, and recreational facilities. The CCC’s work in Indiana, particularly in Brown County and other state parks, left a lasting legacy in the preservation and enhancement of natural resources. It also provided valuable job opportunities during a time of economic hardship.
Hoosier National Forest

What Wildlife is in the Area of Nashville, Indiana?
Brown County, Indiana is a haven for wildlife enthusiasts and nature lovers alike. In the Brown County State Park, lush forests and serene forest edges provide a perfect habitat for wildlife. As you wander through the scenic trails, you’re likely to encounter some of the park’s resident mammals. The graceful white-tailed deer, playful raccoons, and agile fox and gray squirrels are all seen here. Each encounter with these animals adds a touch of magic to your outdoor adventure. The cost to visit is $7 a car for Indiana residents and $9 a car for out of state. If you visit more than one state park in a day your receipt is good for others! Fishing is allowed with a permit; there are four free fishing days a year! Along the north shore are supposed to be the best spots.
Birdwatching
Birdwatchers will find Brown County State Park a true delight, as it is home to a variety of avian species. Keep your eyes peeled for the cheerful robin, the acrobatic white-breasted nuthatch, the vibrant bluejay, and the striking cardinal. In the cooler months, you might spot a junco or hear the caw of a crow echoing through the trees. And if you’re particularly fortunate, you might catch a glimpse of the majestic wild turkeys that roam the park. These encounters, whether with the common or the elusive, make every visit to Brown County State Park a unique and memorable experience, offering a true connection to the natural world.
Be Prepared and Snake Aware
In Indiana, there are four species of venomous snakes. Copperheads in the southern half, possibly cottonmouths near the Ohio River, Eastern Massasauga Rattlesnakes in the northern third, and Timber Rattlesnakes in south-central Indiana. All of these snakes are pit vipers. Although snake bites are rare, it’s important to seek prompt medical attention in the event of a bite. Dialing 911 and seeking treatment at hospitals in Columbus or Bloomington, where anti-venom is available, can ensure a swift recovery from a snakebite.
