Daniel and I went on a whirlwind press trip and ended up visiting Bloomington, Nashville, and Columbus. I know you’re thinking that I’m confused about my geography…but I’m not! These three towns are located about an hour south of Indianapolis, Indiana. All share a rich blend of arts, culture, and outdoor activities. Each town boasts a thriving arts scene, with numerous galleries, theaters, and cultural events celebrating local and regional talent. From live music and theater performances in Bloomington. To the eclectic art galleries in Nashville and Columbus’s renowned architecture tours, these communities offer vibrant cultural experiences. For now though, we’re focusing on visiting Bloomington, Indiana.
Where is Bloomington, Indiana?
In the heart of southern Indiana, Bloomington is a vibrant city known for its scenic beauty and cultural richness. Located approximately 50 miles southwest of Indianapolis, it serves as the county seat of Monroe County, Indiana. The city of Bloomington is home to Indiana University, which infuses the city with youthful energy and intellectual vitality. Surrounded by lush forests, rolling hills, and picturesque lakes, it offers a perfect blend of urban amenities and natural splendor. What is the History of Bloomington, Indiana?
Bloomington, Indiana, established in 1818, is a city with deep historical roots, situated on the traditional homelands of the Miami, Delaware, Potawatomi, and Shawnee people. Known for its scenic beauty and progressive community, Bloomington is home to Indiana University, founded in 1820. Historically, its economy thrived on agriculture, limestone extraction, and manufacturing, with the arrival of the railroad in 1853 significantly boosting industrial growth.
Continued Growth of Bloomington in the 20th Century
Throughout the 20th century, Bloomington evolved with improved infrastructure, the establishment of Bloomington Hospital, and the growth of businesses like Showers Brother Furniture and RCA. Post-WWII, the city experienced substantial industrial and population growth, partly driven by veterans attending Indiana University. To address water issues, Bloomington constructed Lake Lemon and Lake Monroe, ensuring a stable water supply.
Bloomington in Pop Culture
Here are a couple of historical fun facts for you. Bloomington was the site of the Academy Award-winning 1979 movie “Breaking Away.” Written by a former Bloomington resident, the movie showcases one of the town’s greatest passions—bicycling. Many longtime residents remember being extras in the movie, featuring Dennis Christopher,Dennis Quaid, Daniel Stern and Jackie Earle Haley. Ask a few old-timers and I’m sure they would make great tour guides of filming sites around town.
And if you’re a Star Trek Voyager fan, you’ll probably already know that In the Star Trek universe, Captain Kathryn Janeway was born on May 20, 2336, in Bloomington, Indiana. In 2020, a monument was erected in her honor. The monument honoring her future birth is located along B-Line Trail next to the WonderLab Museum.

International Row in Bloomington, Indiana, is a vibrant culinary hotspot along East Fourth Street. Btown Gyros is a local favorite for its mouthwatering selection of Greek and Mediterranean cuisine. Lennie’s
In 1989, Lennie’s rocked Bloomington with gourmet pizza goodness, perfectly paired with imported beers and those cool new craft brews everyone was buzzing about. One of the owners, after catching the craft beer fever hard, teamed up with legislators to overhaul outdated laws. Fast forward to 1994, after some serious brewery hopping and legislative magic, Bloomington Brewing Company burst onto the scene right next to Lennie’s, bringing sudsy joy to southern Indiana as the region’s first brewpub.
Lennie’s is the only place to get woodfired pizza in Bloomington. They are known for their Lennie’s Sandwich, which is amazing! Succulent roast beef, meticulously shaved to perfection, mingling with crispy bacon, delicate shreds of lettuce, and a generous smear of creamy mayo, all nestled on Lennie’s artisanal house bread. But wait, there’s more! A burst of tangy sweetness awaits with marinated red onions, harmonizing beautifully with slices of juicy tomato and decadent mozzarella. Each bite is a journey through layers of savory bliss, a culinary masterpiece that will leave your taste buds singing with delight.
We found it to be the ultimate hangout with a vibe that’s as warm and inviting as their farm-fresh, sustainable eats. And Hey, they proudly pour Bloomington Brewing Company’s delicious, unfiltered brews straight from the tap. Cheers to that!
Nick’s English Hut
If you haven’t been to Nick’s, check it out when you’re visiting Bloomington, Indiana! We indulged in their mouthwatering Pizza Stromboli, Italian Beef Sandwich, and Pork Tenderloin Sandwich – all of them were out of this world! But the real star of the show was the Sink the Biz fries, tossed in Romano and Nick’s special spices. Paired with their famous garlic mayonnaise for dipping-Absolutely delicious! Highly recommend this spot for anyone in the area! This iconic eatery has been a beloved local institution since 1927, serving up classic English pub fare with a Hoosier twist.
Nick’s offers everything from mouthwatering burgers and hearty sandwiches to savory fish and chips, with something for every palate. Wash it all down with a cold pint of beer or a signature cocktail from their extensive drink menu. Whether you’re a longtime fan or a first-time visitor, a meal at Nick’s English Hut is a must for any foodie exploring Bloomington’s vibrant culinary scene.

Living in Bloomington, a college town, means embracing the lively vibe of its student population. But for a change of pace, head to C3. Tucked away in the southeast corner, it’s a peaceful retreat from the downtown bustle. One of the standout dining experiences in the city is at C3, known for its chef-driven cuisine and handcrafted cocktails. Their menu changes seasonally, offering a range of gourmet dishes from elevated tacos to sumptuous steak dinners, perfect for a romantic date night or a special celebration.
FARMbloomington
If you prefer a more eclectic dining atmosphere, FARMbloomington is the place to be. A vibrant culinary hotspot in Bloomington, offering farm-to-table cuisine in a cozy atmosphere. This restaurant is famous for its creative, seasonally-inspired dishes and playful global flavors. A must-try is their FARMFamous Garlic Fries, revered as some of the best in town.
La Una Cantina
La Una Cantina is a vibrant Mexican restaurant located in Bloomington, Indiana. You’ll experience a fusion of contemporary Mexican flavors and a curated tequila bar, drawing inspiration from the vibrant tastes of Oaxaca. Known for its lively atmosphere and authentic cuisine, it’s a favorite spot among locals and visitors alike. Whether you’re craving tacos, enchiladas, or a refreshing margarita, La Una Cantina offers a delicious taste of Mexico right in the heart of Bloomington. With its colorful decor and friendly staff, it’s the perfect place to enjoy a meal with friends or family.
Janko’s Little Zagreb
We were lucky enough to visit Janko’s Little Zagreb, one of the cornerstones of Bloomington restaurants. This is a beloved steakhouse that has been delighting diners since 1977. Famous for its hearty portions and top-quality steaks, Janko’s has earned a reputation as a must-visit dining spot for both locals and visitors. Known also for their spicy meatballs and garlic rolls. I had both of these and they were amazing! Some of the best garlic rolls I’ve had.
The restaurant’s rustic charm and lively atmosphere make it a great place to enjoy a delicious meal with family and friends. Known for its succulent steaks, particularly the filet mignon and New York strip, Janko’s also offers a variety of other delectable dishes including fresh seafood and savory side items. Whether you’re celebrating a special occasion or simply enjoying a night out, Janko’s beckons you to a culinary experience that promises to etch itself into your memory, beckoning you back time and time again.
While at Janko’s Little Zagrab, I saw that Scholar’s Inn Bakehouse provides the rolls listed on the menu . The Scholars Inn Gourmet Cafe & Wine Bar purchased the Bakehouse around the early 2000’s to offer their guests gourmet breads and baked goods. Word quickly spread about the exceptional quality of Bakehouse products. Soon, Bakehouse breads, bagels, pastries, and their famous Bakehouse Granola were being served in restaurants throughout the Bloomington area. Within a few years, these products had expanded their reach across the Midwest, as the Scholars Inn Bakehouse partnered with wholesalers and major retailers in the region.
Hinkle’s Hamburgers
Hinkle’s Hamburgers, Bloomington’s iconic burger spot since 1930, keeps it simple and satisfying. With just a handful of classic burger options– it’s a no-fuss, no-frills delight. For a budget-friendly treat, indulge in the Hinkle Burger or the Double Hinkle with Cheese. And don’t forget to top off your meal with a creamy hand-dipped milkshake for the ultimate diner experience!

Outdoors fans will find plenty to love in scenic southern Indiana. Surrounded by natural beauty, the area offers ample opportunities for hiking, biking trails, and exploring scenic parks and trails. Whether it’s the rolling hills and forests around Nashville, the extensive trail systems in Bloomington, or the beautiful parks in Columbus, nature lovers can easily immerse themselves in outdoor adventures. Bloomington is an outdoor paradise with numerous parks, lakes, and trails to explore.
The B-Line Trail
The B-Line Trail is perfect for a leisurely stroll or a biking adventure, the B-Line Trail is a popular spot among locals and visitors alike. This urban trail connects key parts of the city, offering a scenic route through Bloomington’s downtown. In 2011, Bloomington purchased 18 acres of old railroad bed and opened the second phase of the B-Line Trail, a 3.1-mile paved pathway from Adams Street to Country Club Drive. The City then focused on transforming the former McDoel switchyard into Switchyard Park.
Switchyard Park
Switchyard Park, the popular destination on many weekend itineraries. is a sprawling 57.2-acre park offering a variety of amenities and lots of green spaces. It features courts for basketball, pickleball, and bocce ball, and community gardens with 39 raised beds available for rent. The park also includes a concrete skate park, fitness stations, and a reservable picnic shelter with two sides, each offering 1,800 square feet of space. Visitors can enjoy the 11,000-square-foot pavilion with overhead doors for versatile indoor/outdoor events, an amphitheater with lawn space, and room for food trucks and a mobile stage. Additionally, there’s a shaded bosque with movable bistro tables and chairs, a splash pad, a playground, a main stage and performance lawn accommodating up to 5,000 people, a dog park, and a Bloomington Police Department Substation.
Lake Monroe
Lake Monroe or Monroe Lake as is it also known is a popular spot for boating, fishing, and swimming and is perfect for a day of fun in the sun. Enjoy the fresh air and natural beauty surrounding Indiana’s largest lake. Daniel and I spent the morning kayaking. We learned Lake Monroe was constructed in 1964 and filled with water by 1965, Lake Monroe was developed by the Louisville District of the Army Corps of Engineers primarily for flood control for the White River. Today, beyond its roles in flood control and as a drinking water supply, Lake Monroe serves as a popular recreational destination. Each year, it attracts visitors from across Indiana for activities such as fishing, camping, hiking, and more, making it a vibrant hub for outdoor enthusiasts.
Griffy Lake
Nearby Griffy Lake is a peaceful retreat for kayaking, canoeing, and wildlife viewing. It’s hard to believe this hidden gem is just minutes from downtown. Griffy Lake Nature Preserve, located on the north side of Bloomington, spans a total of 1,180 acres of land, including the 109-acre Griffy Lake. Both the lake and the preserve are owned and managed by the City of Bloomington Utilities Services Board.
Another beautiful lake offering water activities and scenic views, Lake Lemon is a great spot for a relaxing day outdoors. Lake Lemon lies just 10 miles northeast of Bloomington. This scenic and tranquil spot attracts boaters and fishermen from as far as Kentucky and northern Indiana. Built in 1953, Lake Lemon originally served as a drinking water reservoir for Bloomington’s growing population. It remained the city’s primary water source until the late 1960s and now serves as a backup supply.
Hoosier National Forest
Road Trip! While spanning over 200,000 acres the Hoosier National Forest is an outdoor recreation dream. This vast wilderness area in the great outdoors is ideal for hiking, horseback riding, and exploring miles of trails. Don’t miss the panoramic views from the top of the Hickory Ridge Lookout Tower. The dense Hoosier National Forest is a paradise with a spectrum of fall foliage, maple and beech trees that transform into brilliant reds and yellows. Spanning over 200,000 acres, the forest offers a plethora of amenities. Visitors can seek solitude or embark on adventures with friends and family, enjoying horseback riding trails (permit required), bike trails (permit required), various camping options, hiking, a swimming beach, and a boat launch on Monroe Lake. Conveniently accessible off State Highway 50 West, Tincher Pond within the forest is a renowned fishing spot, featuring picturesque waterside picnic areas and excellent birdwatching opportunities.

Charles C. Deam Wilderness
Situated within the Hoosier National Forest, it provides a variety of additional outdoor options. Named after Indiana’s first state forester, this 12,472-acre wilderness area is a haven of lush forests, rolling hills, and pristine lakes. Its vast network of over 37 miles of trails caters to hikers, horseback riders, and backpackers, providing opportunities to explore diverse landscapes, from dense hardwood forests to serene pine groves. The wilderness is home to an array of wildlife, including white-tailed deer, wild turkeys, and numerous bird species, making it a prime spot for wildlife observation and birdwatching. The scenic views from the trails, particularly from the historic fire tower, offer breathtaking panoramas of the forested landscape, making it a favorite destination for photographers and nature lovers. Tibetan Mongolian Buddhist Cultural Center
Dedicated to the people of Tibet, this Cultural Center, located on 90 acres, offers a relaxing and peaceful setting for meditation and reflection.The Tibetan Chortens here are the only ones in the nation. The TMBCC itself, established in 1979 by the eldest brother of the Dalai Lama, is a serene and spiritual place. It’s a unique cultural center that provides educational programs and a peaceful retreat for those interested in learning about Tibetan and Mongolian cultures. Promoting and Preserving Tibetan and Mongolian Cultures in the USA.
Supporting the preservation of cultural and Buddhist traditions within Tibetan exile communities and among Mongolians from Kalmykia, Buryatia, and Tuva. Offering education on Tibetan and Mongolian cultures to the Bloomington community. Facilitating cultural exchange between Tibetans inside and outside of Eastern Tibet whenever possible. Throughout the year, it provides a place for workshops, teachings,seminars, initiations, retreats and weekly ceremonies relating to their cultures. We enjoyed going there and talking with the monks. We thought the sand art was beautiful and so intricate.

While visiting Bloomington, we discovered Farmers Markets are huge here! They’re some of the best. Bloomington, Indiana’s farmers’ markets are a delightful celebration. Every Saturday morning from April through November, the Bloomington Community Farmers’ Market transforms Showers Common. You can find a vibrant array of fresh produce, artisanal baked goods, and hand-crafted items. The bustling market is not just about shopping. It’s a social event where friends and neighbors gather. Musicians play lively tunes, and chefs demonstrate culinary skills.
In addition to the Saturday market, the Tuesday Market at Switchyard Park offers a midweek opportunity. Both markets emphasize sustainability and support local farmers and artisans.
The Downtown Bloomington Farmers’ Market is a producer-only market offering a diverse range of farm products, including vegetables, fruits, cheeses, meats, poultry, eggs, flowers, plants, and herbs, all sold directly by the producers. It aims to connect urban residents with local farmers and operates every Saturday from 7:30 a.m. to noon, May through October, with an indoor market from November to April at Grossinger Motors Arena.

Spring Mill State Park

The memorial honors astronaut Virgil “Gus” Grissom. Grissom, one of the original NASA Project Mercury astronauts selected in 1959. He became the second American to fly in space, following Alan Shepard. He was also the first NASA astronaut to fly into space twice. His first flight, aboard Liberty Bell 7, ended in controversy when the spacecraft sank after splashdown. Grissom’s second flight was as command pilot of Gemini 3, the first manned Gemini flight, with John Young. Grissom, along with astronauts Ed White and Roger Chaffee, tragically died in a fire. It took place during a pre-launch test for the Apollo 1 mission.
