One of the most fun things to do in fall in Door County is experiencing a traditional fish boil. The Door County fish boil is a unique dining experience that first-time visitors shouldn’t miss. Originating with Scandinavian settlers, the traditional fish boil features freshly caught Lake Michigan whitefish, boiled with red potatoes over an open fire. We went to the White Gull Inn in Fish Creek to try their version of a fish boil. At the White Gull Inn , no onions are added to preserve the pure fish flavor, and only salt is used. The boil culminates in a dramatic “boilover,” where flames rise, spilling fish oils over the pot.

Once cooked, the fish and potatoes are served with lemon, melted butter, coleslaw, homemade bread, and Door County cherry pie. Guests can enjoy beverages and watch the cooking process, with the master boiler sharing the history of this iconic meal. The White Gull Inn, one of the oldest establishments serving fish boils since 1959, is well-known and often requires reservations, especially in summer.

A visit to Welcker’s Lounge was the perfect opportunity to continue our fall culinary journey in Door County. The Lounge, established in 2023, honors the rich history of its building, originally the Lumberman’s Hotel from 1889. Welcker’s Lounge exudes a charming speakeasy atmosphere with live piano music and a delightful 1920s theme. I had one of my favorite meals of the week here. The ambiance was amazing, the food was absolutely delicious, and the service was top-notch. Our waitress was dressed in the cutest 1920s-inspired outfit, adding even more charm to the experience! If you’re ever in the area, you HAVE to try their great grandma’s cherry cheesecake—it’s a must!
