We Stayed at This Charming Cabin

This charming cabin is your dream vacation home nestled in the heart of McAlester, Oklahoma. When you step inside, you’ll fall in love with the rustic farmhouse decor and the cozy, homey atmosphere. I love the farmhouse sink!!!!!!

Mrs. Paula (Kevin too) has put her heart and soul into this place, and it shows. You’ll find beautiful handmade crocheted blankets that add that extra touch of comfort and warmth.

But that’s not all – this cabin is all about the little details! They’ve thought of everything, with K-cups, snacks, and seasonings to whip up your favorite meals in the fully-equipped kitchen. Plus, there are even fishing poles for those who want to explore nearby Lake Eufaula!

They even provided books to read as well as some DVDs. Oh, and did I mention there is a washer and dryer , which is a HUGE PLUS!

The back deck is a haven for relaxation. Soak your worries away in the hot tub, sizzle up a barbecue feast on the grill, and gather ’round the firepit with plenty of comfy seating for those memorable evening chats.

Near McAlester, you’ll find a wealth of outdoor adventures and cultural experiences. Robbers Cave State Park, just 30 minutes away, offers scenic hiking trails once used by outlaws like Jesse James. Visitors can enjoy rock climbing, horseback riding, and cabin rentals for a longer stay.

Lake Eufaula provides a relaxing lakeside escape, with shops and waterfront activities perfect for a leisurely day. Nearby, the planned resort community of Carlton Landing offers a charming atmosphere for exploration.

For a taste of local culture, Lovera’s Market in Krebs is a specialty grocery store known for its authentic Italian products, including famous hand-stuffed olives and fresh cheeses. Lovera’s Market and Yardbird were our favorite dining experiences on this trip.

The Krebs Heritage Museum dives into the history of this “Little Italy” area, featuring exhibits on mining tools, artifacts, and stories of Italian immigrants who shaped the town.

Just 20 miles north, Arrowhead State Park spans 2,200 acres, offering a variety of outdoor activities such as RV camping, hiking, biking, and fishing. With equestrian trails, a marina with dining, a miniature golf course, and a swimming area, there’s something for everyone at this expansive park.

Places to Eat in McAlester

The Yardbird at 1896 

We had an incredible meal at the Yardbird in McAlester, Oklahoma! The food is absolutely amazing, and everything is made from scratch. Our favorite dish has to be the Cornbread Salad – it’s a must-try! The Irish nachos and chicken salad were also delicious.

Joe, the owner, is an absolute delight. He’s incredibly personable and has a fascinating story.

One unique thing about this place – no Wi-Fi or loud bands, just great conversation. Joe wants you to feel like you’ve stepped back in time to 1896 when the building was constructed. The ambiance is further enhanced by the fact that Joe only plays vinyl records, giving the place a cool, vintage vibe. Definitely, a must-do when coming to McAlester.

Captain John’s BBQ 

For classic barbecue, Captain John’s BBQ delivers mouthwatering brisket, pulled pork, and homemade sides, with peach cobbler as a sweet finish. We enjoyed the onion rings that came with ranch dip. They were crispy and well-seasoned. My grilled chicken came with two sides, so I chose the baked potato and fried okra. Daniel had a well-cooked steak with fried okra and the sweet jalapeño cornbread. It was all quite tasty and the place was hopping.

El Tequila

This family-owned establishment serves the McAlester community. Their diverse menu features basic Mexican combination plate dishes along with more unusual dishes such as the Spicy Chipotle Pasta—linguine with grilled chicken or shrimp in a special chipotle cream sauce—and the Hawaiian Fajitas, which combine shrimp, steak, chicken, and fresh pineapple for a tropical twist. With a family-friendly atmosphere, a spacious bar area, and patio, El Tequila provides friendly service and a warm, inviting atmosphere for all guests.

For a hearty breakfast and homestyle lunch, Lucy’s Two is a delightful diner with must-try chicken-fried steak and pies. What About Bob’s is a family-owned favorite serving full breakfast and lunch seven days a week, with breakfast available until closing

Modo Mio Italian Restaurant is a small, unassuming spot praised for its fantastic food, including fried ravioli and bruschetta. The Compass specializes in wood-fired pizzas made with fresh, in-house dough and sauces, and a diverse menu with pastas, subs, steaks, and vegetarian and vegan options. For great Mexican food, Gringo’s Taqueria serves large burritos, tasty steak quesadillas, and fan-favorite al pastor tacos and chorizo nachos, known for fast service, great queso, and a variety of salsas. Spaceship Earth Coffee is a cozy, family-friendly spot downtown, perfect for espresso, craft beer, and wine, offering artisan drinks. Sake Japanese Restaurant serves flavorful Japanese dishes, including sushi and hibachi in a casual Tandy Town setting.

Burger Supreme Drive-Inn offers no-frills comfort food, including classic burgers and onion rings, with a cash-only policy.  For a retro-style experience, Angel’s Diner serves classic American meals like burgers, fries, milkshakes, and all-day breakfast, with friendly service and a nostalgic atmosphere. Try Marilyn’s Restaurant for its down-home country diner feel with breakfast specials, pork chops, chicken and more.

Pete’s Place Restaurant is a McAlester staple, known for serving authentic Italian dishes like their famous homemade ravioli. Everyone says you have to eat there. HOWEVER, we were not impressed. The food had no flavor and the spaghetti sauce tasted canned. It could have been an off day but please your own judgment. If you only have a few days here, I recommend skipping it.

Finish your day with dinner at The Yardbird at 1896, known for its lively atmosphere and delicious Irish nachos, seared Ahi tuna, and Dirty Bird Wings.

Day 2: Start the day at Angel’s Diner before you head towards Robbers Cave State Park, located just 30 minutes from McAlester. Pack a picnic from Lovera’s Market in Krebs to enjoy in the park or dine at one of the local spots nearby. Explore hiking trails, enjoy rock climbing, or go horseback riding in this historic park where outlaws like Jesse James, Belle Starr, the Dalton Gang, and Civil War deserters once hid. Wrap up your visit with dinner at The Compass, for wood-fired pizzas or hearty subs.

Day 3:  Explore the Tannehill Historical Gun and Prison Museum to learn more about the area’s fascinating history, including exhibits on historical firearms and Oklahoma’s prison past. Then, head to Chadick Park for a peaceful stroll or picnic among the trees. For lunch, try Le Salt Deli, a cozy spot known for its sandwiches and salads. They also have vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free options. In the afternoon, visit the McAlester Museum of Aviation, to learn about the area’s aviation history. For dinner, enjoy Mexican food at Gringo’s Taqueria, known for its large burritos, al pastor tacos, and excellent queso.

A couple of places we recommend are Hangin 8 BBQ or Dobber’s Roadhouse. Check out Carlton Landing, a planned resort community. In the evening, head back to McAlester, Oklahoma for dinner at El Zocalo, where you can indulge in traditional Mexican dishes. The El Pastor Street Tacos are always popular.

Day 5: Take the Union Pacific Historic Walking Trail (Self-Guided). For some old-fashioned comfort food for lunch, head back to Angel’s Diner, a 50’s themed restaurant. Afterward, head to Puterbaugh Center to relax and enjoy the botanical gardens and museum. For dinner, try Modo Mio Italian Restaurant for pasta or pizza.

Day 6: Start your day with a visit to Arrowhead State Park (again, a full-day trip). Enjoy hiking, a spirited game of mini golf, or the regular course. Try out the riding stables or enjoy some fishing or water sports. Bring a picnic lunch or explore dining options nearby. Return to McAlester for dinner at Burger Supreme Drive-Inn, a no-frills spot for classic burgers and onion rings.

Day 7: For breakfast, head to What About Bob’s, a local favorite for a hearty breakfast or lunch. Then head to BierKraft and take a tour. You can make reservations on their website. After your tour, enjoy a Grobe Bratwurst, a Flatbread, or a Cheese Board. If you’re still full from breakfast, try the pub fries or a pretzel and root beer instead. Spend your afternoon taking a last stroll through Downtown McAlester for final shopping or sightseeing. End your trip with dinner at Rangler BBQ, enjoying the barbecue, steaks, and homestyle classics.
