Board French Lick Scenic Railway in Southern Indiana

As I rode the scenic train through French Lick, the stunning landscapes gave way to stories from the past. One fascinating tale was about the federal government cracking down on illegal gambling in 1948, shutting down French Lick’s operations for decades until legal gambling returned in 2006.

Journey 25 miles through the scenic countryside to Jasper, Indiana, and step back in time. I enjoyed the stunning fall colors, a waterfall, an 1850s historic cabin, and the childhood home of Larry Bird. Along the route, we passed the historic monastery of the Sisters of St. Benedict, who have been a part of the community since 1914. Originally focused on education, they adapted to changing times after Vatican II in the 1960s. Their Church of St. Joseph boasts 192 stained glass windows and an organ with 1,300 pipes, still used during daily services. The Sisters’ legacy of hospitality continues today, and I looked forward to visiting the monastery later as I listened to the stories and admired the scenery.

The Sisters of Saint Benedict in Southern Indiana

Visiting the Monastery of the Sisters of Saint Benedict in Ferdinand, Indiana, was truly enriching. As I stepped onto the serene grounds, I felt an overwhelming sense of peace. The beautiful gardens and calming pathways invited moments of reflection.

The Academy, built in 1887, is the monastery’s earliest section, features a two-story Romanesque Revival style with arched windows and courtyards. A major expansion from 1915 until it was finished about ten years later, added the Chapel, which mirrors the Academy’s style with towers, turrets, and an 87-foot dome visible from miles away. The grounds offer peaceful walkways, a grotto, statues, and areas for prayer and meditation. The monastery grounds also include a cemetery where the sisters are laid to rest.

Inside the monastery, the Sisters’ warm hospitality shone through. Their commitment to service and spirituality was inspiring.

One of the most interesting things about the West Baden Hotel is the Angel Room.
