Omio App Travel Tips: First-Time Users
We used the Omio app to book our train tickets, and we felt a little nervous about the experience at first. As Americans, navigating train travel in Italy can feel confusing. Still, we pushed through the uncertainty, put on our “big kid pants,” and figured it out so we can help you do the same.
We were on our way to Tivoli, and this journey taught us a lot.

Arriving at Rome Termini
When you arrive at Rome Termini, you have plenty of options if you feel unsure about where to go. You can ask a police officer for help or look for staff members wearing red or maroon jackets or vests. They are there to guide travelers.
For your first train experience, arrive at least 45 minutes to an hour early. This extra time gives you space to understand the station layout, locate your platform, and feel more confident.
Once you find your platform, take a moment to enjoy the atmosphere. Grab a coffee and a pastry before boarding your train.
Booking with the Omio App
The Omio app made booking our tickets simple and efficient. We could easily view train times, track our connections, and check platform information all in one place.
This convenience reduced a lot of stress, especially since we were unfamiliar with Italy’s train system. The real-time updates helped us stay on track throughout our journey.

Our Experience on the Regional Train Using the Omio App
We took a regional train operated by Trenitalia. The ride itself felt comfortable and straightforward. The seats were comfortable, and there were large windows that made the ride more enjoyable. However, the luggage racks are quite small. We even saw dogs on the train, so I’m guessing they’re allowed. There are restrooms on board, but they can be a little rustic, so plan accordingly.
Our first train experience started off a bit hectic. An announcement came over the loudspeaker in Italian, and suddenly everyone got off the train before it even moved. We had no idea what was happening.
Thankfully, a kind local noticed our confusion and explained that the crew was performing a safety check and everyone needed to deboard temporarily.
Why You Need Extra Time
This situation showed us how important it is to build extra time into your travel plans.
We waited on the platform for about 20 to 30 minutes before reboarding. That delay cut our connection time in half. Luckily, we had planned for an hour between trains, so we still had about 30 minutes when we arrived at Rome Tiburtina.
Without that buffer, we could have easily missed our next train.
Making a Connection at Rome Tiburtina While Using the Omio App
When we arrived at Rome Tiburtina, we needed a moment to figure out where to go. The process became simple once we checked the Omio app and followed the signs.
We saw that we needed to go upstairs using the elevator, exit into the main station, and then head to our next platform.

Important Tip: Multiple Train Stations with Similar Names
Some cities have multiple train stations with very similar names, and they are not interchangeable. Always double-check the exact station name before booking a ride or ticket with the Omio app, especially when using a cab or rideshare app, to make sure you arrive at the correct location. In Rome, several train stations have similar names but are completely different locations. For example, Rome Termini and Rome Tiburtina are both major hubs, but they serve different routes and are not close enough to be treated as interchangeable.
We ran into this problem in booking similar-sounding stations. Once we arrived, we quickly realized something was off—and then things got even more frustrating. We could not find another taxi, and it was nearly impossible to get an Uber in that area. Instead of stressing out, we adjusted our plan. We used the Omio app again and quickly booked another train ticket from the station we were at for about $5. That flexibility saved us.
The lesson here is simple: always double-check the exact station name before booking transportation, especially in cities where multiple stations have similar names.
Tips and Tricks for Using Omio and Riding Trains in Italy
Arrive early so you have time to get comfortable with the station. Keep a close eye on the Omio app for platform updates and schedule changes. When you hear a series of loud beeps all at once, that means the doors are about to close. Expect announcements in Italian and pay attention to what other passengers are doing if you feel unsure.
Always allow extra time between connections because delays can happen unexpectedly. Double-check station names when booking rides or tickets to avoid confusion. Ask for help when needed, and follow station signage carefully once you understand the layout.

Final Thoughts
Using the Omio app made train travel in Italy much easier than we expected. Even with a few confusing and stressful moments, we successfully navigated the system and made it to Tivoli.
If you feel nervous about taking the train in Italy, that’s completely normal. With a little preparation, extra time, and the right tools, you can confidently navigate the experience and enjoy the journey.

Genoa, Italy Port Day on Our MSC Cruise
We stepped off our MSC Cruises ship into the lively port of Genoa and headed straight for the waterfront. The Porto Antico area mixed historic charm with modern energy and set the tone for the day.
Daniel and I explored the city, moving from narrow old streets to open squares like Piazza De Ferrari. We took in the architecture, watched local life, and enjoyed the contrast between old and new.
We ended the day back by the harbor with a relaxing meal and sea views. Genoa felt vibrant, historic, and easy to enjoy in just one day.

Barcelona Shore Excursion from MSC Fantasia
Our day excursion in Barcelona gave us a glimpse of the city’s highlights, but felt more rushed than expected. We explored viewpoints on Montjuïc and saw cultural landmarks like the Magic Fountain of Montjuïc and Palau Nacional from a distance. We also made a brief stop near the iconic Sagrada Família, taking photos but not going inside.
The itinerary included a short shopping stop and limited time to explore on our own, which made it hard to fully experience the city’s energy and architecture. Barcelona is vibrant and full of culture, but we left feeling like we only skimmed the surface.
